Decoding matter

DESY is one of the world's leading accelerator centres. Researchers use the large-scale equipment at DESY to explore the microcosm in all its diversity, from the interplay of the smallest elementary particles and the behaviour of novel nanomaterials to those vital processes that take place between biomolecules. The accelerators and detection instruments that DESY develops and builds are unique tools for research: they generate the world’s most intense X-ray light, accelerate particles to record energies and open completely new windows onto the universe.

DESY is a magnet for over 3000 visiting researchers from more than 40 countries every year and a sought-after partner for national and international collaborations. Dedicated young researchers find it an exciting, interdisciplinary environment. The research centre offers attractive training options for a variety of professions. DESY works with industry and business to advance new, socially valuable technologies and promote innovation. This also benefits the metropolitan regions of DESY’s two locations, Hamburg and Zeuthen (near Berlin).
